LMS Magnet Program Information

Lanier Middle School is proud to be a Vanguard Magnet campus serving Gifted and Talented (G/T) students. Our program provides a rigorous, engaging curriculum in math, science, English language arts, and social studies, designed to challenge advanced learners and nurture their creativity, curiosity, and leadership.

Through our cluster model, G/T students are grouped together in core classes where they collaborate with peers of similar abilities. This structure promotes critical thinking, research, and independent learning—hallmarks of the Lanier Vanguard experience.

Magnet Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for Lanier’s Vanguard Magnet lottery, students must be identified as Gifted and Talented (G/T) in all four core academic areas: math, science, English language arts, and social studies.

How Do I Qualify?

Current HISD G/T Students Identified in All Areas
No additional G/T documentation is required. Your student is automatically qualified for the Lanier Vanguard Magnet lottery.

Former HISD G/T Students Identified in All Areas
After submitting your School Choice application, please email a copy of your student’s qualifying HISD G/T matrix to jgarza8@houstonisd.org.

Students Identified as G/T Outside of HISD
After submitting your School Choice application, please email available G/T documentation, including the student’s G/T matrix, assessment scores, and/or identification letter, to jgarza8@houstonisd.org.

Documentation for students identified outside of HISD will be reviewed by the appropriate HISD G/T team to determine eligibility prior to the lottery.

Important to Know

Lanier’s Vanguard Magnet Program accepts applications for incoming 6th-grade students only.

For the 2027–2028 application season, Lanier is accepting Magnet transfers only.

Although Lanier is an International Baccalaureate World School, the IB Middle Years Programme is implemented schoolwide and is not a separate transfer program. Therefore, IB transfers are not offered.
