Credit By Examination
Credit by Examination (CBE) is a method for students to demonstrate proficiency in grade level or course content. At Lanier, we offer three CBE options: (1) Grade - Level Acceleration/Advancement, (2) High School Course Credit, and (3) World Languages. If you interested in CBE, please review the guidance listed below.
*** For HISD students enrolled at either Carnegie Vanguard High School (Carnegie HS) or Debakey HS or planning to enroll, reach out to the campus' counseling staff listed below for information regarding Credit By Exam participation. If the student is eligible, Carnegie HS or DeBakey HS counseling staff will complete a Campus Submission Form on the student's behalf.

Middle School CBE Administration Eligibility

Grades 6–8 Grade-Level Acceleration/Advancement
Grade 6–8 students seeking grade-level acceleration/advancement must achieve 80% or higher on the criterion-referenced tests in the following subjects for the grade level they want to skip:
- Language Arts
- Science
- Social Studies
- Mathematics
Students can only skip grade levels up to 8th grade. Skipping 9-12 grades is not allowed. The student must be enrolled in HISD and have Counselor approval.
Grades 6–8 Acceleration/Advancement CBE tests are provided through the University of Texas High School and are administered over multiple days pending the results of each subject test.
Assessments are ordered one at a time, and the subsequent assessment will only be ordered after results are received that the student passes with a score of 80% or higher. If a student is successful with a score of 80% or higher on Language Arts, the next three tests will be ordered.
If the student is not successful, the grade acceleration/advancement process ends. The student is not eligible to accelerate. To accelerate to the next grade level, the student is required to successfully pass all four assessments.

Qualifications for High School Credit in Middle School
Middle school students may begin to apply for high school credit CBE courses during specific windows listed in the CBE administration eligibility table above, as credit earned is applied to the student’s high school four-year plan.

A student in grades 6–8 may be awarded credit based on performance on a CBE taken with no prior instruction. Students who have had no prior instruction must be awarded credit for the applicable course if the student receives a score of 80% or higher on the CBE assessment.
Middle School World Language Guidance
Credit for World Language courses in grades 6–12, whether through CBE or course completion, must comply with the program prerequisites, ensuring that course credit is awarded sequentially starting with level I. Middle school students may begin to apply for high school credit CBE courses during CBE #1 or CBE #4 as credit earned is applied to their high school four-year plan.
