School History

Bob Lanier Middle School in Houston, Texas, was founded in 1926 as one of the first junior high schools in the newly created Houston Independent School District and has served generations of students for nearly a century. Its mascot, the Purple Pup was adopted shortly after opening. Originally named Sidney Lanier Junior High after a poet, the school became known for its strong academics and community spirit. Over time, it grew into a diverse and inclusive campus, offering advanced programs like the Vanguard gifted and talented magnet and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. In 2016, the school was renamed to honor former Houston mayor Bob Lanier, reflecting a commitment to representing the city’s broader history. Today, it continues to be a top-performing middle school that welcomes students from across Houston.

Academic Development and Growth:

In 1973, Lanier's Vanguard program for gifted and talented students was instated, significantly expanding its academic offerings. The school has consistently focused on improving academic performance, particularly for its diverse student population. Students from over 70 different elementary schools attend Lanier through Houston ISD's school choice program. Lanier has also been recognized with Texas Gold Performance Awards for its achievements in various subjects. In 2003, Lanier became the first IB MYP (International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme) middle school in HISD, further solidifying its commitment to rigorous academic programs.

Renaming and Modern Era:

A significant change occurred in May 2016 when the HISD board voted to rename the school from Sidney Lanier Middle School to Bob Lanier Middle School. This decision was made to honor Bob Lanier, a highly respected former mayor of Houston (1992-1998). His popularity cut across racial, ethnic and political party divides. Bob Lanier won many awards recognizing his achievements, including the Hubert Humphrey Civil Rights Award and the Urban Beautification Award.

The Premier Middle School in Houston

Today, Bob Lanier Middle School continues to serve grades 6 through 8, offering both a neighborhood program and the only Vanguard Magnet and International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme in the district. Students at Lanier continue to receive a robust education and out perform their district and state peers academically as they prepare for high school, Destination 2035, and beyond. We are proud to be recognized as a top performing school from U.S. News and World Report as being a Proud "A" rated campus by the Texas Education Agency.
